If you’re looking to get into a new RV on a budget but you don’t want to sacrifice space or features, a fifth wheel is a fantastic choice. They’ve been compared to a one-bedroom condo on wheels. Fifth wheels are affordable because they use a truck (or other towing vehicle) to pull them — you’re not paying for the hauling power when you purchase a fifth wheel. If you do decide to buy a truck or other vehicle to pull your fifth wheel travel trailer, you can use the vehicle for other purposes year-round. For practical folks who want to explore the world of RVing, a fifth wheel is the way to go.
But there’s a wide selection of fifth wheels on the market, and it can be difficult to know which ones you should consider. In this guide, we’ll share three of the best fifth wheels under $50,000 that have a reputation for quality and durability and good reviews from owners who say they enjoy using them. We’ve indicated which fifth wheels we think are best for full-timers, for families, and for couples.
1. Coachmen Chaparral 298RLS
Most Flexible, Best for Full-Time RVing
The Coachmen Chaparral ranks high on our list for several reasons, not the least of which is flexibility. With ten floorplans to choose from, you’re sure to find a configuration with the features that matter to you.
Chaparrals sleep 4-11 people, so they’re spacious enough to fit a whole family plus some friends, depending on the floor plan you choose. Their lengths range from 33-41 feet, so you’ll have plenty of room to move around. The Chaparral 298RLS is one of our favorites because it’s so lightweight, weighing in at only 9575 (dry weight) — if you need to factor a tow vehicle into your budget, this will help you out.
Storage options and features abound, including an entertainment center, backup camera, USB charging ports, 8-cubic-foot refrigerator, 30-inch microwave, 21-inch oven, dual pane windows, and oversized under bed storage. While the MSRP of the 2018 version is $55,584, most dealers are offering discounts on the 2018 versions since the 2019 model has been released.
2. Heartland Sundance S5 302BH
Lightweight with Luxury Amenities, Best for Families
The Heartland Sundance S5 series offers all the luxury of their larger S7 in a smaller, lighter version. With a dry weight of only 9,310, this fifth wheel travel trailer is one of the lightest that we would recommend, so it’s perfect for families on a budget. With six floorplans to choose from, you can get exactly the space and features that you need.
The Sundance S5 302BH is a new floorplan that offers a bunkhouse, outside kitchen, walk-in pantry, power awning, plenty of storage, and exterior speakers. It’s ideal for larger families with sleeping space for up to eight people. The Sundance 302BH also has two private sleeping areas — a master bedroom up front and the bunk room in back and a tri-fold sofa for friends who want to come along. A full bath and half bath mean that no one will be arguing over bathroom time. You’ll have plenty of options for cooking as well, since an exterior camp kitchen gives you two extra burners for cooking. Clean-up is easy with the single sink outside and double sink inside.
The 2018 MSRP is $47,741.00, and again, you can find this model on discount from many dealers, making it even more affordable.
3. Crossroads Cruiser CR3391RL
Enduringly Popular, Best for Couples
Crossroads’ Cruiser is one of the most popular RVs out there, and for good reason. It’s one of the most luxurious options with valuable details like the Secure Stance entry step, bike rack, power theater seats, an aerodynamic painted front cap, rolled roof edge, sure seal underbelly, and secure slide seal system.
You have five floor plans to choose from, ranging from 33 to 40 feet, and we recommend the CR3391RL. This version features triple slides, a rear living layout, a king bed in the master, and a residential refrigerator, slide-out dinette, great storage options, plus a convenient kitchen island that includes a double sink. Couples will appreciate the romantic fireplace in the entertainment center.
At 10,518 dry weight, this fifth wheel is a bit heavier than the others we recommend, but it’s still not excessively heavy, making it easy enough to haul. You can find the 2019 for just under $50,000, and you can reduce your spend if you locate a 2018 version.
Making Your Decision
Owning an RV is a lifelong dream for many people. RVers are passionate about life on the road, whether it’s just for a vacation or whether they’re RVing full time. Making a decision on which fifth wheel to buy can be tough, since it’s such a large purchase — especially when you know you’ll be using the RV for many years. You want to make sure you choose the option that you’ll be happy with for the long haul. RV shows, typically scheduled September through January, are a great way to check out the options you’ve narrowed your search to.
If you’re still not sure which fifth wheel is the right one for you, try renting the models you’re considering. Renting will ensure you put the RVs through their paces so you get an accurate idea of what the experience will be like long-term. Try out the features in each one, and make sure you have enough room for your family or whoever will be enjoying the RV with you.
Don’t Forget the RV Accessories
Don’t forget to purchase a cover for your fifth wheel to protect it while it’s in storage. Quality RV covers from brands like ADCO and Classic Accessories will defend your fifth wheel from harmful UV rays, rain, and other environmental hazards. Even RVs that are stored inside can experience moisture buildup that results in mold and mildew problems when you take your fifth wheel out of storage. It’s also smart to install tire covers when your RV is parked so that UV rays don’t deteriorate the tires, causing a dangerous driving situation when you’re ready to get rolling again.
