Summer Storm Prep While RVing
Susan J
The majority of the time RV camping is spent relaxing and being lazy, but summer storms can pop up quickly and without warning, causing an end to all that “chillaxing”. Being prepared for any type of weather is always a good idea and having a game plan will ensure that when bad weather strikes you’re not running around lost.
Be mindful of the weather. You might be enjoying a perfect day one minute and the next you notice that the wind is beginning to pick up and the sky is darkening. Once it becomes apparent that a storm is blowing in, it’s time to take action. By taking care of a few items, you will feel better about an impending storm and your camping equipment will thank you as well.
Retract Your Awning
One of the first and easiest things you can do is to retract your awning. If you fail to do so and it gets damaged in a storm either by a wind gust or by flying debris, it will cost you a chunk of change to repair or replace. If you have awnings over windows or smaller slides, retract those as well.
Secure Your Outdoor Living Space
Fold up chairs. Tuck away any small items that might blow away such as bug spray, tablecloth, etc.
Check for Stability
When initially setting up camp, stabilizer jacks and scissor chocks should be put into place to keep RV wobbling at a minimum. Before a storm, it’s not a bad idea to double check that everything is still in place and properly installed.
Make a Plan
Should the weather turn severe, you should have a plan in place. This should include who grabs what and where to go.
The most important thing to remember is to just stay calm. Summer storms usually pass quickly and then the fun can resume!
